Why I Don’t Do Weigh-Ins (And What I Track Instead)
I don’t weigh my clients. No weekly weigh-in, no chart, no number to report back. For women who’ve spent years at slimming groups where the scales were the whole point, this comes as a bit of a shock. So let me explain why, because the reasoning is the same reasoning that gets them unstuck.
The scale measures the wrong thing, badly
Your weight on any given morning is affected by water, hormones, salt, when you last ate, where you are in your cycle, how much sleep you got. It can swing a couple of kilos in a day for reasons that have nothing to do with fat. The number is noisy, and it tells you very little about what’s actually changing in your body.
But the bigger problem isn’t accuracy. It’s what the number does to your head.
One number can undo a good week
I’ve seen it too many times. A woman has a brilliant week. She eats well, she feels calmer around food, she’s got more energy, she’s proud of herself. She steps on the scale, it’s up by a kilo because of water or her cycle, and the whole week collapses. The good feeling evaporates. The “what’s the point” sets in. By the afternoon she’s eating the way she used to.
That’s the scale handing your sense of progress to a number that doesn’t even mean what you think it means. A great week becomes a failure because of a measurement that was never reliable in the first place. It puts you right back in the all-or-nothing thinking that drives the cycle.
What I track instead
Real progress shows up in ways the scale can’t see, so those are the things I watch.
Energy, first. Are you waking up less exhausted? Getting through the afternoon without crashing? That’s a sign your eating is actually working, and it shows up long before any number does.
Cravings. Has the constant pull toward sugar reduced? Are you thinking about food less? That’s a sign the restriction is easing and your body is settling.
Sleep, mood, how clothes feel, whether food has stopped being a daily battle. Whether you can eat a chocolate without it ruining your day. These are the things that mean your life is genuinely changing, and not a single one of them appears on a scale.
The number isn’t the goal anyway
Here’s the part worth sitting with. You don’t actually want a number. You want what you think the number will give you. Energy, confidence, freedom from the obsession, clothes that fit, not hating photos of yourself. The number was only ever a proxy for those things.
So we go straight for the real things. They’re better measures, they don’t lie to you about a good week, and they’re what you wanted in the first place. The weight changes too, steadily, in the background, as a side effect of a lifestyle that’s working. It just isn’t the main thing we measure.
If the scale rules you
Try putting it away for two weeks. Not forever if that feels too big, just two weeks. Notice how you feel about your eating when there’s no number waiting to judge it. Most women find a kind of relief they didn’t expect, and they make more progress in those two weeks than in months of weighing, because no single morning can knock them off track.
I don’t weigh my clients because the scale measures the wrong thing and punishes good weeks. What I track instead is everything that actually makes a life feel better. Those are the things you came for.
